Stomach cramps are frustrating to deal with, especially if you are not sure why these cramps are happening in the first place. The truth is that there are a number of reasons why you may end up with stomach cramps. The treatment for these causes will vary.

Menstrual Cramps

One of the most common reasons for stomach cramps is your menstrual cycle. While this does not apply for men, women often suffer from cramps during that time of the month. The cramping varies from woman to woman. Some women say that they have only mild cramps during their cycle while others have severe cramps. Cramping can start even before your period has arrived. You can keep track of your period to determine whether or not it is due to arrive. If so, this could be the leading cause of the stomach cramps.

Stomach Cramps from Constipation

Constipation can cause stomach cramps. Constipation occurs when the bowels are backed up. If you are not having a regular bowel movement each day, you can end up constipated. If you are struggling to have a bowel movement, pain may occur. The stomach cramping is common after days of not having a bowel movement. It may also occur if you are straining while on the toilet. The best thing to do for relief of constipation is drink plenty of water and eat foods that are loaded with fiber.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as IBS, is a bowel disorder. If you have IBS, you may experience cramping due to the problems that you have with your bowel movements. People who have IBS often have days or weeks where they are constipated and then days or weeks where they have diarrhea. The actual known cause of IBS has yet to be determined. Some believe that diet has a lot to do with it. If you have not been diagnosed with IBS but are experiencing some of the symptoms, it is best to speak with your physician.

Food Poisoning

If you have severe stomach cramps, you may have contracted food poisoning. You can get food poisoning from drinking or eating something that is contaminated with bacteria and other serious toxins. You may have heard about some food poisoning bacteria, such as salmonella and listeria. It is important to make sure that you cook your foods properly at all times. If you ate at a restaurant, you could have gotten food poisoning from their food. Stomach cramps, diarrhea, and a fever are all signs of food poisoning. If these are symptoms you have, it is time to call the doctor.

Appendicitis

Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed. The appendix is located directly near the large intestine and everyone has one. For some people, the appendix never causes any problem. However, for some other people, the appendix needs to be removed. The symptoms include stomach cramping, chills, nausea, and shaking. If you have any of these symptoms, it is vital to visit your doctor immediately.
