Yoga has become more and more popular throughout the years. Originally considered to be part of the alternative lifestyle, it has now become a mainstream way of getting fit. Yoga centres have sprouted all over the place. Even regular gyms have added yoga classes as part of their line-up. While it does have a lot of benefits, it is not for everybody. You might have been enthusiastic about trying it but later found out that it doesn’t seem to have an effect on you. Here are 5 reasons why yoga might not work for you:
It’s a philosophy
While yoga is a good way to keep fit, it is much more than a group of exercises that stretches out your muscles. It is a philosophy, a way of life. Yoga involves the developing the physical, mental, spiritual and the emotional aspects of a person. It invokes a change in life choices such as your diet and work environment. It requires a commitment that you might not be ready to give.
Just like in any class, the teacher is an important part of the atmosphere of the yoga session. Teaching requires expertise, credibility and an ability to communicate to the students. You also have to be receptive to the idea that the teacher will help you adjust your poses. If you cannot be comfortable around your yoga teacher, then the dynamics will prove ineffective.
You have an inability to relax
A large portion of a yoga class is spent on meditation and deep breathing exercises. The idea is to get you to relax and let go of the things that are stressing you out. However, sometimes you have too much on your plate and your mind does not stop working. Thinking about the mountain of paperwork that you have do, the laundry waiting to be folded, or the bills that need to be paid may render you unable to relax.
The environment is not conducive to yoga
Yoga invokes the use of the different senses. Thus, having a harmonious environment is important. That means no loud music blaring from the speakers, no bad smell lingering on the wall, and having the proper temperature and lighting in the room. Without these, you might be distracted and unable to concentrate on performing your sun salutations.
Your fitness goal is different
Every person has a goal in mind when working out. It might be losing weight, having a way to relax, doing a low-impact exercise, building impressive muscles or improving the heart rate. It is very important that you select the fitness method that is able to achieve your goal. While yoga is great for sweating out the stress, improving flexibility and increasing muscle tone, it might not be for you if you want the best cardio workout possible. If that’s the case, it might be better to switch to a different workout, say running or cycling.
There are a lot of reasons for you to take up yoga and there are just as many reasons why you shouldn’t. The important thing is to consider each one to determine if yoga fits into your life.
